Villaran wins 110m hurdles in record style at Palarong Pambansa

LAOAG CITY – Miko Villaran of Western Visayas set a new Palarong Pambansa record in the secondary boys 110m hurdles Tuesday at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium here.

Villaran clocked 14.00s, eclipsing the 14.68s registered by Patrick Unso of National Capital Region (NCR) in the 2010 edition hosted by Tarlac.

Mark John Paculanang of Central Visayas took the silver medal in 14.32s while Charles James Villapana of Northern Mindanao clocked 14.75s to earn the bronze medal.

Western Visayas now has seven golds, five silvers and seven bronzes to take the No. 3 spot in the overall medal tally, behind NCR and Calabarzon Region.

As of 12:30 p.m., NCR has 16 golds from various events: gymnastics (8), taekwondo poomsae (3), table tennis (2), athletics (2), and chess (1).

Arman Hernandez of Don Carlos Village Elementary School in Pasay City garnered five gold medals in the boys' Cluster 1 floor exercise, vault, horizontal bar, Individual All-around and Cluster 2 Team Championship events in the gymnastics competition at the Ilocos Norte National High School.

The other three golds were courtesy of Kizz Gungob of Timoteo Paez Elementary School in Pasay City (Cluster 2 Individual All-around) and King CJ Pernia of Escuela De Sto. Rosario in Pasig City (secondary boys' Cluster 3 Individual All-around and Team Championship).

Over at the Mariano Marcos State University Teatro Ilocandia, John Paul Rijie Soriano of FEU High School won the boys' Individual and Team Standard, while Casey De Leon of Makati Science High School dominated the girls' Individual Standard in taekwondo poomsae.

Meanwhile, Clarisse Jilian Recio of Blue Danube School, Inc. in San Pablo City, Laguna triumphed in the girls' elementary Individual Standard in taekwondo poomsae for Calabarzon Region, which tallied 12 golds, 13 silvers and seven bronzes.

Frances Joenel Cuabo of Iligan City East National High School (boys' taekwondo poomsae Individual Freestyle), Euricka Gayle Tictic of Bukidnin National High School (girls' blitz chess), Clint Gimarangan of Mabuhay Integrated School in Malaybalay City (boys' elementary long jump) and Mary Janelle Tan of Kimaya Elementary School (girls' Individual Likha Anyo double weapon arnis) delivered the four gold medals of Northern Mindanao, which also has nine silvers and 11 bronzes to take the No. 4 spot.

Cordillera Administrative Region ranked fifth with four golds, four silvers and one gold followed by Bicol Region 4-1-6), Central Visayas (3-6-5), Davao Region (3-3-4), Caraga (3-2-5) and Eastern Visayas (3-2-3). (PNA)
