MANILA – Spaniards Sofía González and María Belén Carro outlasted Americans Piper Ferch and Madison Shields, 21-18, 14-21, 20-18, Saturday in the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Challenge round-of-12 at the Nuvali Sand Courts in Santa Rosa City, Laguna.

Gonzalez scored 24 attacks and Carro had 11 as the Spaniards advanced against world No. 84 Malgorzata Ciezkowska and Urszula Lunio of Poland, who triumphed over Americans Hailey Harward and Kylie DeBerg, 21-14, 21-15.

In the men's division, the top-seeded British twins Javier and Joaquin Bello outplayed Dutch rising stars Leon Luini and Ruben Penninga, 21-18, 21-19.

Javier delivered 18 attacks while Joaquin had four blocks.

“Whenever you’re the No. 1 seed in any international tournament and to have a target on your back is sometimes difficult but for us, we think of the same way every tournament,” Joaquin said.

“Regardless of what seed we are or what the expectation is, if we go game by game, point by point, stay together united and just fight point by point, that’s what we do,” he added.

German siblings Jonas and Benedikt Sagstetter, who eliminated Filipinos James Buytrago and Rancel Varga, also marched to the next round after pulling off a 21-13, 21-18 win over No. 44 Vinicius Costa and Heitor Barbosa of Brazil. (PNA)
