Is The Batman Who Laughs Dead? DC Doesn't Seem to Think So
Batman and the Jokerare some of the most dangerous men in the DC Universe, which is why their fusion in theBatman Who Laughs is so terrifying. This villain merged the worst aspects of these iconic characters, and despite his very clear death, one DC writer believes that the character is far from done.
Scott Snyder has written some pretty fantastic comics for DC Comics, including Batman and, more recently, Absolute Batman. One of his most popular creations has always been the Batman Who Laughs, a twisted version of Batman from the Dark Multiverse with the moral code and sadism of the Joker. During an impromptu AMA on Twitter/X, Snyder answered a question about whether the Batman Who Laughs will ever return to DC Comics.
Surprisingly, despite the character's definitive death, Snyder is certain that the character will appear again. DC is just giving the character a rest due to how much he was used.
The Batman Who Laughs Isn't Done Tormenting Batman Just Yet
How Can He Possibly Return from Being Thrown into the Sun?
The Dark Multiverse is full of demented versions of DC's greatest heroes. A version of Superman was mutated into a horrific red ant, and a version of Wonder Woman became Cheetah. But by far the scariest villain was the Batman Who Laughs. After the Joker finds out he's going to die, he goes on one last rampage, slaughtering James Gordon and murdering dozens of children. While Batman tries to stop him, he eventually succumbs to Joker Venom and is transformed into the next version of the Joker. From here, the Batman Who Laughs murders every hero on his planet.
Of course, he doesn't stop there. The Batman Who Laughs eventually makes his way over to the Prime Universe, where he attempts to destroy reality and recreate it in his own twisted image, leading to one of the greatest and most vicious wars in the Multiverse. While the Batman Who Laughs comes very close to taking over reality, he is eventually defeated and promptly tossed into the sun by a giant golden Wonder Woman. This fate seems like a pretty definitive death, but Snyder believes that the villain isn't quite done yet.
The Batman Who Laughs Was DC's Darkest Villain
Created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
The DC Multiverse is a big place, and there are plenty of ways to bring a dead character back to life. While the Batman Who Laughs is definitely dead, that hasn't stopped him from returning before. In a very comic-book twist, the version of the Batman Who Laughs killed by Wonder Woman was simply his mind in the body of a Bruce Wayne with Doctor Manhattan's powers. Batman Who Laughs' original body still exists, and it was even reanimated once with a Black Lantern ring. It's fully possible that the Batman Who Laughs will return and this time, he might just succeed in defeating Batman and bringing the universe down into darkness.
