10 Beginner Tips To Start Understanding Blue Prince

The puzzling adventure, Blue Prince, offers players plenty of mystery, but its very nature can also make it a bit confusing when first jumping in. While its story is intriguing, the game is designed in a way to leave players a bit in the dark to figure out their own path. With a roguelike twist, puzzles and rooms of the magnificent mansion reset every day. Yet, the confusing mysteries are offered without time limits or jump scares, which provides a bit of a peaceful and cozy feeling for the game.

Though it wasn't talked about much before release, Blue Prince has quickly gained popularity among players. The indie game puts players in the shoes of young Simon who has just inherited the impressive mansion and grounds of Mt. Holly from his great-uncle. However, in order to claim his inheritance, the stipulation is set that Simon must find the rumored 46th room of the 45-room estate. Complicating things further is that rooms do not stay put, and each day players are essentially creating their own map of the mansion while drawing from a pool of blueprints at each door.

10 Blue Prince Is A Roguelike - Don't Expect To Solve It All In One Day

There Is No Limit To How Many Days, So Take Your Time

Blue Prince is categorized as a roguelike game, meaning that the mansion resets at the end of each night. Rooms that you mapped out will be completely erased for you to start drafting again on the next day, and any keys, gems, and money that was obtained will not carry over. There are a few permanent upgrades that can be unlocked over the course of gameplay, but these are few and far between. The most important thing to bring into each new day is knowledge, as rooms provide clues that will help solve puzzles in future days.

Because of this style of exploration and puzzle mechanics, it is best to keep in mind that you are not going to solve everything on Day One, and there is nothing wrong with having to start new days. There are no limitations on how many days Simon can explore Mt. Holly before the inheritance is forfeited, so take your time and don't stress about having to do it all at once.

9 Keeping A Notebook Handy As You Play And Saves Time

There's A Lot To Remember Each Day

With so many puzzles and clues provided throughout the experience, it can be easy to forget things. Blue Prince does not have a system for players to keep track of things in the game, and at one point even suggests players may want to keep a journal or some kind of note-taking tool nearby.

Though some may scoff at the idea of physically writing down sheets of notes for a video game, you will thank yourself later for taking the time to jot things down. Many of the puzzles in Blue Prince are not quickly resolved and some small hints here or there may be important days later. Even subtle clues such as the paintings on the walls, which each result in one letter being highlighted for each room and eventually spell out a clue of their own, can be worth keeping track of.

8 Don't Just Rush To The Antechamber

There's A Lot To Figure Out Along The Way

In my first few days in Blue Prince, I made the mistake of thinking that I should rush to the Antechamber as soon as possible. While this is an important part of the game, rushing to the Antechamber early on is not going to accomplish anything. In fact, until the Antechamber levers are found in other rooms of the mansion, such as the Secret Garden, Greenhouse, and more, reaching the Antechamber will simply leave you looking a large blank door that cannot be opened.

There are so many little details in the rooms along the way, that it is much better to slow down and investigate the rooms at a more methodical pace rather than simply making a line to the Antechamber on the Blueprints. Find the achievements in the game, uncover the secrets, jot down clues, and learn a little about the ins and outs of Mt. Holly. Each run will reveal a little more, and you will know when you have reached a point to start moving to the Antechamber.

7 New Rooms Should Always Take Priority, Even If It Means A Dead End

New Rooms Mean New Clues And Information

At each door, you are faced with a choice of three different rooms to draft. While it can be tempting to focus on where the doors are to keep the map flowing, it is important to note any new rooms that appear in the draft. Some of the rooms are much rarer than others, and often these rare floorplans will have greater clues to give. Additionally, certain rooms are only able to be placed in specific parts of the mansion, such as the garage needing to be on the west wall.

Your most important goal, especially early in the game, is gathering information.

Even if you end up reaching a dead end in order to place a new room, the knowledge gained in that room can be instrumental in solving the greater mysteries of the mansion for future days. Your most important goal, especially early in the game, is gathering information.

6 Investigate Each Room Thoroughly, As Usable Items Can Be Overlooked

Items Like The Metal Detector And Shovel Can Blend Into Surroundings

Whereas some games will have usable items glowing or colored in a way to be obvious to the player, Blue Prince takes a much more subtle approach. Many of the usable items can be easily missed if you don't take the time to look around. A shovel leaning against a wall, some running shoes sitting on the ground, even the gold coins that can be used to purchase things in certain rooms of the mansion, are all designed to blend in with their surroundings. Hovering a cursor over the item will change the icon to show that it is something that can be picked up, but you have to pay attention.

Blue Prince looks to be one of the best games of 2025, but many PlayStation players will be wondering if the game will be available on PS Plus.

Once a room is familiar to you, it is easier to speed through the areas with the knowledge of what is typically found where. Early in the game, or anytime you come to a new room, it is best to pause and look around for clues and items.

5 Don't Limit Yourself To Inside The House, Check The Grounds Too

Some Permanent Upgrades Are Found Outside

Each day you will begin just inside the front doors, facing into the mansion. However, turning around will reveal that you can walk outside and explore the grounds as well. The outer sections of Blue Prince are quite large and include several useful secrets of their own, including ways to unlock some permanent bonuses. Opening some of the gates and doors outside will often require information that you have to find inside the mansion, but taking a look around outside first can help you know what it is you will want to look for.

Also, as one of the stipulations in the will is that Simon cannot sleep in the mansion, exploring the grounds will also show you where your character sleeps each night. A simple but cozy little campsite is set up to the East, just next to a locked-up Apple Orchard.

4 If You Can't Solve A Puzzle, You May Not Have A Necessary Room In The House

Blue Prince's Puzzles Often Involve Needing Other Rooms Available

As I began to get deeper into the estate, I found myself getting frustrated at some of the puzzles which I couldn't figure out how to solve. Though the frustration is likely to be inevitable at times, it helps to know that sometimes a puzzle can't be solved because you haven't gotten all the rooms necessary yet. In my case, I came across the Laboratory puzzle and, despite thinking I'd figured out all the clues, I could not get the machine to turn on.

Eventually, I read a blue card on the wall in the room that very obviously stated that the machine needed additional power from the Boiler Room, which I had not yet discovered. Other puzzles and rooms have similar needs, creating a bigger puzzle in the placement of rooms. So, if you are struggling with a puzzle not being solved, it could very well be that something is needed that you don't yet have.

3 Watch For Rooms With Keys And Gems, Especially As You Build North

The Further North You Go, The More Locked Doors You'll Find

It can be really easy to place any of the available rooms in the first few areas of each day, but as you start to move further up on the map, it is much more likely that you will come across rooms that are locked or require gems to draft them. These rooms are often more and more useful as you go, but you will want to plan ahead in order to reach them. If you plan on pushing far in the mansion on a day, try to aim to get as many keys and gems as you can in the early rooms. Thankfully, when drafting a room, it will tell you if there are keys or gems found within.

Memos on red paper are false. Don't be fooled by supposed clues that lead you astray.

Poor planning, or bad luck in room draws, can put you in situations where there are several doors or trunks, but no keys to open them with. This may force you into calling it a day, with the unfortunate knowledge that there was more to do if you had just had access to one more key.

2 Steps Won't Be As Important When Starting Out, So Investigate Freely

Later In The Game They Will Play A Larger Role

Each time Simon enters a room, a step will be subtracted from the allotted number that you start each day with. Once you are out of steps, the game will force you to call it a day and start again tomorrow with fresh steps. There are ways to earn steps back during the day, such as eating food or entering a bedroom, which will be important later in the game.

When you are first starting out playing Blue Prince, don't allow yourself to get stressed out about the number of steps at the top of the screen. The game starts with a daily number of steps being 50, which is more than enough for the first several days. More than likely, you will hit dead ends far before you run out of steps, even if you are not using many of the bedrooms to get extra steps returned during the day.

1 Don't Stress About It, There's Always Tomorrow

Keeping An Eye On Everything Is Good, But Remember There Are More Days

With so many puzzles and mysteries all around you, it is remarkably easy to become overwhelmed and stress out about having to solve every issue at once. This game is not designed to be a race, but rather as a methodical brain-teasing experience to have fun with. The sheer number of little details to uncover in the game is worth taking your time to uncover.

There is always another day, with another thing to discover. Therefore, the most important tip to keep in mind for Blue Prince is to take your time and enjoy the journey. Even if you fail to write down a clue, you will see it again. And eventually, things will all come together.
